About Ride the Tide Surf School
Ride the Tide Surf School is a boutique surf school in Barbados, offering high-quality surf lessons at Freights Bay, one of the island’s most consistent and beginner-friendly surf breaks.
Founded in 2012, we began as a small mobile surf school, "a man in-a-van", with a simple goal: to teach surfing properly, with care, patience, and respect for the ocean. Today, we are proud to operate from our purpose-built surf school and surf shop directly opposite Freights Bay, delivering a refined surf experience that prioritizes quality over quantity.
A Premium Surf School Experience in Barbados
Not all surf lessons are the same. At Ride the Tide, we focus on creating a calm, supportive, and unrushed learning environment — ideal for first-time surfers, improving beginners, and relaxed holiday surfers.
Our surfing lessons are defined by:
Small, carefully capped surf lesson groups
In-water surf coaching (not shouting from the beach. Or in the water)
High-quality surfboards selected for your size and ability
Consistent, reliable waves at a real surf break
This is surfing designed to feel enjoyable, confidence-building, and genuinely rewarding.
Surf Lessons at Freights Bay – Why Location Matters
Freights Bay is widely regarded as the best place to learn to surf in Barbados. Its gentle, rolling waves, sandy bottom, and predictable conditions make it ideal for beginners and longboard surfers.
Because Ride the Tide Surf School is based directly at Freights Bay, your lesson time is spent surfing — not travelling, waiting, or relocating between beaches. When your lesson begins, you are already at the beach, in the right place, at the right time.
Expert Surf Coaches & Small Group Lessons
Our experienced surf coaches work closely with each surfer, offering calm, clear instruction exactly when it’s needed. Lessons are intentionally limited to a maximum of four surfers per coach, ensuring personal attention and steady progress.

A Surf School Focused on Quality, Not Volume
Ride the Tide Surf School is not a high-volume operation — and that’s intentional. We cap numbers, respect conditions, and focus on delivering a surfing experience that feels personal, safe, and memorable.
We measure success not by how many people we take into the water, but by how people feel when they leave it:
More confident. More relaxed. Truly stoked.

Is Ride the Tide a good surf school in Barbados?
Yes. Ride the Tide Surf School is widely regarded as one of the best surf schools in Barbados thanks to its prime location at Freights Bay, small lesson groups, and professional in-water surf coaching. We focus on quality instruction, safety, and creating an enjoyable experience rather than running high-volume lessons.
Where is Ride the Tide Surf School located?
Ride the Tide Surf School is located directly opposite Freights Bay on the south coast of Barbados. We are the only surf school in Barbados based at a true surfing break, meaning no travel time between your lesson and the waves.
Is Freights Bay good for beginners learning to surf?
Freights Bay is considered the best beach for beginner surf lessons in Barbados. The bay offers gentle, consistent waves, a sandy bottom, and forgiving conditions that allow beginners to build confidence and progress safely in real ocean conditions.
How many people are in each surf lesson?
We limit lessons to a maximum of four surfers per coach or cover ratio 4:1. This small group size allows for personalized coaching, more waves, and a calmer, more enjoyable learning environment. If there are 5 surfers then there's an additional surf coach in the water.
Do you offer private surf lessons in Barbados?
Yes. Ride the Tide offers private surf lessons for individuals, couples, families, and small groups. Private lessons are ideal for those seeking focused coaching, faster progression, or a more exclusive surf experience.
Are surfboards included in the lesson?
All surf lessons include the use of high-quality surfboards selected specifically for your height, weight, and experience level. We take pride in maintaining a well-curated quiver rather than using one-size-fits-all equipment.
Can complete beginners learn to surf at Ride the Tide?
Absolutely. Many of our guests are first-time surfers. Our coaching approach is calm, supportive, and confidence-focused, making Ride the Tide an excellent choice for anyone learning to surf in Barbados for the first time.
Do you only teach beginners?
Yes, of course we do, its our specialty. While we specialise in beginner surf lessons, we also work with improving surfers who want to refine technique, build consistency, or feel more confident in the water.
Do you rent surfboards at Freights Bay?
Yes. We offer surfboard rentals at Freights Bay directly from our surf shop. Our rental quiver includes boards suited to beginners through to more confident surfers, all maintained to a high standard.
Why choose Ride the Tide over other surf schools in Barbados?
Ride the Tide stands out for its location, low student-to-coach ratio, in-water coaching style, and premium approach. We focus on thoughtful instruction, real wave riding, and an experience that feels relaxed, personal, and memorable.
What makes Ride the Tide a boutique surf school?
We intentionally limit numbers, operate from a purpose-built surf school, and prioritize personal attention and quality over volume. This boutique approach allows us to deliver a surf experience that feels unrushed, professional, and genuinely enjoyable.
