Smaller Groups. More Waves. Better Surfing.
Why Ride The Tide Does Things Differently at Freights Bay
At Ride The Tide Surf School, we’ve quietly gone in the opposite direction to the rest of the industry.
While many surf schools are increasing group sizes, stretching instructor cover, and turning lessons into conveyor belts, we’ve doubled down on what actually makes people surf better: contact, focus, and wave count.
Our rule is simple and non-negotiable:
a maximum of four surfers per surf coach — and often fewer.
No exceptions. No squeezing in “just one more.”
Why Smaller Groups Matter (More Than You Think)
Surfing isn’t a lecture. It’s a physical skill that lives in timing, positioning, confidence, and repetition. The more direct contact you have with your surf coach, the faster you progress.
Smaller groups mean:
- More waves per surfer – no long queues, no waiting your turn
- More hands-on coaching – real corrections, not generic shouts from the beach
- Better positioning – you’re put in the right spot for your ability
- Safer sessions – especially for beginners and non-swimmers
- Faster confidence build-up – which is everything in surfing
When groups get bigger, something has to give. Usually it’s wave count, safety, or actual coaching. At Ride The Tide, we refuse to compromise on any of those.
Vacation Surfers: Make Your Time Count
If you’re surfing on holiday, your time is limited. You don’t have weeks to “figure it out.”
Our small-group approach means:
- You spend more time riding waves, less time sitting around
- Sessions are tailored to your ability, not the average of a large group
- You leave Barbados having actually learned something, not just tried surfing
One focused session with high wave count beats three crowded ones every time.
Beginner Surfers: Learn Properly, From the Start
For beginners, group size is everything.
With smaller groups we can:
- Teach proper pop-up technique (not survival flailing)
- Control the lineup so beginners aren’t overwhelmed
- Adjust board choice, stance, and positioning for your body type
- Build confidence safely and progressively
This is how beginners catch their first real waves — and enjoy them.
Surfboard Hire Customers: Right Board. Right Spot. Real Advice.
At Freights Bay, surfboard hire shouldn’t mean “grab whatever’s left.”
When you hire a board from Ride The Tide, you benefit from:
- Correct board selection for your size, skill, and the conditions
- Local knowledge of where and when to surf Freights properly
- Honest advice on what will help — and what won’t
- Equipment chosen for learning, not just convenience
Because the right board in the right place changes everything.
Why We Stay Small (Even When It’s Easier Not To)
Yes, larger groups are easier. They’re more profitable in the short term. But they don’t produce better surfers — and they don’t deliver better experiences.
We’d rather keep group sizes tight, maintain real instructor-to-surfer contact, deliver higher wave counts, and send people home genuinely stoked on surfing.
That’s what Ride The Tide has always been about.
